404 page for logged out user

The website I’m working on shows a 404 page for buddypress pages that require being logged in to view. I’ve found several posts with other devs having the same problem but never is there a solution.
I’ve tested this on multiple sites on different servers and with basis themes and no plugins activated and have tested with and without a bp-custom.php file. Result is always the same.
Can someone point me to a solution, or to where Buddypress is working on this, or even to the function that’s checking if authentication is required?
