Buddypress messages, quick one I promise?

I am working with some legacy code for a buddypress site. I have read that by deafult you should be able to send messages to any user, tho the project I am working on only allows you to send messages to a ‘friend’ is there a simple fix for this? Of if not could someone give me a list of files to look at (maybe I can fill them up with deafult buddypress code)
