How to use groups_get_groupmeta??

Alright, so I’ve been using this:
http://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/how-to-edit-group-meta-tutorial/to make my own “plugin” to display a bunch of custom fields, but I want them to display in an area, not in the header of the group page. I was linked to:
http://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/groups_get_groupmeta/but with no direction on how to use it. I am really new to PHP. I can maneuver through it, and frankenstein things together, but I am mainly a designer. could someone give me in-depth instruction on how to do this?
