Where/how to get started?

I need a fairly basic widget for the front page that displays “Help Needed”. Users can posts needs and tie them to specific groups. I have looked at some of examples that buddypressdev has but that is more so for pages. Almost all of this functionality is in the widget.
Where is a good starting point?
