In BuddyPress can users create their own posts/threads? Similar to a Tweet in Twitter.

@eric1704 members can post activity and other members can also reply to those activities as comments which will be displayed a threaded conversation.

So no need for another plugin in Buddy Press for that? So Activity is like a new Tweet/Post. And it can be directed to just one person or a group or I guess to all your friends/followers?
