Notifications not updating

I have most of my website working fine, but when users get a new notification it doesn’t go away. They can go the “unread” page of the notifications page and it will say “you have no unread notifications” but there’s still a little notification symbol.
Is there any way to fix this? If my users are anything like me it’s going to drive them mad.
Can’t seem to find this issue anywhere.
