Absolutely nothing working

I’ve been running WordPress MU at http://www.freedomblogging.org for some time now (using Dreamhost.com hosting), and recently had to upgrade to MU 2.7.1, which functioned properly after 2 installations.
Yesterday I downloaded Buddypress from the “Download” page – so it was the “RC-1 combo version.”
I’ve followed the installation instructions meticulously through 6 installations and get the same errors over and over again.
The home page functions well, but whenever I click to go to anything besides the traditional WordPress dashboard, I get an error page.
The error says this, replacing xxxxx with whatever page I’m trying to go to, like “members” or “members/admin” or “blogs”:
“Not Found
The requested URL /xxxxx was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.”
What is going on and how can I fix it? I’ve been working at this for hours to no avail. Help, please!
Other information: I’m running WordPress MU 2.7.1 with a fully functional Wildcard DNS. I don’t recall setting anything else up for it besides the Wildcard DNS and standard MU installation.
