Best way to start customizing Buddypress

    What is the best way to begin customizing BuddyPress themes so that they can be compatible with future WPMU & Buddypress version changes? And without having to make those changes again after every version change?

    Can child themes be created like in regular WP? If so, please point me to a good resource. I have been customizing regular WP themes for my blogs for a couple of months using child themes and its been great.
