bbpress 1.0 integrates well now

  • @burtadsit

    Participant

Previously I just basically gave up getting bbpress rcX integrated into wpmu and bp. Just wasn’t working. Today I gave it another shot since bbpress went 1.0. Worked like a charm right out of the box.

    Upgrade to bbpress 1.0

Install the bbpress integration plugin 1.0 in wpmu.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bbpress-integration/

Activate and do what the bbpress integration plugin tells ya to do.

Go into bbpress admin and the wordpress integration settings. Fill out the forms properly.

Do what it says on that bbpress screen for manually matching the wp and bbpress config vars.

    Clear your browser cache/cookies.

Result: instant login and cookie integration.

Follow the bp group forums instructions.

    Result: instant group forums.

About damn time! I guess I can cancel my enrollment in advanced particle physics classes that seemed to be a previous requirement.

I have a couple of questions because I still can’t get my discussion to activate in groups. Integration is fine, but that dang “you must configure forums” warning won’t go away no matter what combination of codes & plugins I use.

    1. “Upgrade to bbpress 1.0”

Upgrade from what? I’ve never been able to get an RC version to work so I’m running alpha 6.

    2. By upgrade, do you mean install the new version or should I find an upgrade button somewhere? (not seeing one on alpha 6)

    3. Buddypress enable plugin (from buddpress>>bp-forums)

Where did you put this? In my-plugins or bb-plugins or nowhere?

    4. “Go into bbpress admin and the wordpress integration settings. Fill out the forms properly”

Anytime I EVER EVER (haha) try to change stuff in there, it totally boots me out of all of the bbpress logins. No login name/pw will work.

That’s it for now but I’ll probably be back with more questions. =D

**Edit — #5 (told ya I’d be back) Did you put the “allow user switching” code at the bottom of the bb-config?

    Thanks =D

    Hello.

    1) Doesn’t really matter what you were upgrading from. Just install bbpress 1.0.

    2) I don’t trust the auto upgrade process so I manually upgrade

    3) No buddypress enable plugin is needed. You do have to be running the right version of php though. See:

    http://josephscott.org/archives/2009/03/conclusion-of-libxml2-issues-use-php-529-libxml2-273/

    http://josephscott.org/archives/2009/03/wordpress-libxml2-episode-iv-a-new-plugin/

    4) Don’t know what the issue is there

    5) Yes this user switching is needed.

Don’t forget to enable pingbacks and xmlrpc. Also my test group forum didn’t work right away. I disabled the group’s forum component in the group admin page, saved the settings and then re-enabled it. Worked after that.

    Hi Burt,

I’m assuming that you upgraded from 1.0 alpha 6.

Did you remove the “cookie” lines from wp-config.php before you activated the bbPress integration plugin in WPMU?

And re: #3, Are you sure don’t need to activate the BuddyPress Support plugin in bbPress?

I’ll give this a shot soon. Just wanted to get some detailed instructions before I do so!

Burt – Oddly, my bbPress run Group Forums have been running nicely since day one. I am still on alpha6 of bbPress and because it’s been working well now for 6 months, I am actually afraid to upgrade bbPress version up to 1.0 for fear of mucking it all up. What do you think? Any idea what we get by bbPress going 1.0?

I don’t think there is any overriding reason to upgrade Mike. Your access to bbpress is through bp. I doubt you’ll see any benefit at the moment. Unless Andy creates some bp features that require running 1.0 or wpmu develops some kind of requirement, there wouldn’t seem to be any benefit for the risk involved. (Read possible headaches).

Run what works for you, be happy. :)

I’m up and running on bbPress 1.0 as well!

    Integration appears to work!

FYI, I was on bbPress 1.0 alpha 6 with BP 1.0.2.

    Here’s what I did:

-Thanks to Burt and Sam (over at bbPress) for their instructions

    1) Backup database

    2) Backup bbPress forum plugins and themes

    3) Deactivate all bbPress plugins from the bbPress admin area.

    4) Comment out only the cookie-related lines in wp-config.php (Do not remove your defined KEYS or SALTS)

    5) Manually upgrade bbPress to 1.0 (basically download bbPress 1.0 and overwrite the old bbPress files).

    6) Download bbPress Integration plugin into your WPMU plugins folder (/wp-content/plugins)

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bbpress-integration/

    7) Log in to WPMU and activate the bbPress Integration plugin.

    8) In WPMU admin area, go to “Settings > bbPress Integration”.

Enter in your bbPress URL (eg. http://example.com/forums/) and for WordPress type, select “WordPress MU”.

    Hit “Save Changes”.

    9) Copy the now-generated “Manual Cookie Settings” to line 2 of your wp-config.php file.

Copy the bbPress define line into your bb-config.php file.

    10) Log into your bbPress admin area.

At this point, a bbPress message should pop up asking you to upgrade the database. Do so.

Hopefully, bbPress should have upgraded successfully at this point.

    11) Now login into the bbPress admin area, go to “Settings > WordPress Integration”.

Everything should already be set (if you used TheEasyButton’s tutorial for 1.0 alpha 6 that was the case for me!).

    Hit “Save Changes”.

    12) Reactivate all bbPress plugins.

    13) Clear your browser cookies and attempt to login to WPMU and head to your bbPress forums URL. If you’re logged in to bbPress, mission accomplished!

    14) If you have BuddyPress group forums enabled, login to your BuddyPress Groups (eg. http://example.com/members/YOURUSERNAME/groups/).

Go into each group’s admin settings area, and uncheck “Enable Discussion Forum” and “Save Changes”. Then re-check “Enable Discussion Forum” again and “Save Changes”.

This is what worked for me… can’t say it will work in all cases though!

Step #11 will probably differ for some depending on what they did before.

Now I got to update my custom bbPress theme for all the new changes made since 1.0 alpha 6!

Thanks for your response Burt. I tried and tried all day yesterday to get this sucker to work. I swear I’m missing something obvious. Discussions absolutely refuse to be enabled. And I did check out the plugin info you linked to. I checked my phpinfo & am running everything that was suggested (but installed & tried the plugin anyways lol) so that must not be the problem.

At one point, I totally crashed WPMU and had some strange wp-header errors kicking out. That was quite a feat.

I guess my next step will be to try r-a-y’s instructions & hopefully the upgrade will work & I’ll be able to see what the deal is that I can’t just install from scratch. My head is starting to hurt from all the head vs desk slamming I’ve got going on. *laughs* I shall not be defeated!!!

TY to everyone that’s offered help. =D Much appreciated!!

Yep r-a-y that’s the exact sequence. Even down to enable/disable forums in each group.

heh, this is insane, I’ve been trying different methods all the time and still cannot get everything done properly. I think I am having issues only with cookies now. Single sign on doesn’t work but I can properly log-in on forum and wpmu with my username I registered on wpmu. I’ve been checking cookies array and after loging to forum 1 more appears that’s why I think I have a problem with this part. Also, when I log-in as an admin to wpmu and in another tab as and forumadmin to bbpress – I cannot access forum admin section for some reason. Please note these are 2 different users in database.

Could you guys point me into the right direction where something can be wrong? I am running out of all permutations where should I change something :)

I am nearly there, I know it, it must be something simple I am missing. Please help, it’s 3rd day I cannot crack it!

    @lokers

I forgot to mention my installation details:

    1) wpmu 2.7.1

    2) buddypress 1.0

    3) bbpress 0.9.0.4

Also, I think this might be very important thing. When I am loged in to forum as an forumadmin and I go in another tab to wp-admin page, I’ve got this message straight away on my screen: “Please log in again.”. Even before I type something………

bbpress 0.9 doesn’t work with all this. You need to use bbpress 1.0/1.0.1.

    @lokers

thanks Burt, just upgraded the forum and all these tricks are working now!

Now I have to integrate it with buddypress groups, I guess I will lose another hours/days as I can already see an error message “There was an error posting that topic.” when I try to submit new topic via bp

Thanks anyway for the hint in the wpmu/bbpress integration part.

    @benfremer

Burt — are you locked out out of the bbpress admin after you do that integration?

Also….what does the code look like for the config vars for “Do what it says on that bbpress screen for manually matching the wp and bbpress config vars.”

I’ve tried the bbpress integration like 7 times now…following a lot of your tips to keep getting closer and closer.

    Thanks,

    Ben
