smart text disabled without friends?

Hello,
I want to create a site where users are automatically become friends with each other when they sign up.
So, I can somewhat accomplish this by disabling friending in the admin panel. However, I noticed that the message system that uses ‘smart text’ to find users no longer functions properly. It searches for profiles, but fails to find any matches. Despite this when i click on someones profile and hit send message, I can send a message to them that way.
Is there a way to enable smart text without friending someone?
OR
Is there a way to automatically make everyone friends with each other on join?
