autocomplete message with no friends?

Hello!
I noticed when I disabled friends, the autocomplete no longer functions in the message compose area.
Does anyone know the way to make autocomplete work for all users who aren’t friends?
I know you can message usernames manually but this is not user friendly!
I know its possible because http://pro.gigaom.com/ did it…
