$bp->is_single_item false on activity single?

Hi, using 1.5 RC1 on a single activity page. I’m getting $bp->is_single_item == false after wordpress is fully loaded (when its processing my header)
I’m not sure if I’m misunderstanding from this:

and I’m supposed to be handling this variable myself, I would of been under the impression it would be handled internally by built in components.
the url where I am seeing this behavior is in the format:
http:/sitename.com/community/user-nicename/activity/111/
