I’m trying to build a custom BP theme frontpage like wordpress.com. Does anyone know how I can get the image, title and link that I can use in entry.php in the activity folder?

The plan is to have the 12 latest posts on the frontpage but BP-theming is not made easy, in my opinion

I could do this by playing with the CSS but it would just make it more complicate

Image, title, and link of… what? Posts from your blog(s)? If so, that’s all standard WordPress theming and has nothing to do with BuddyPress making it any harder.

I think the first example at http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/13020/display-thumbnail-only-on-the-very-first-post-in-the-loop will get you started!
