I’m working on a project, and I very much would like to use wordpress. I need the ability to have a dating site type of website. Except instead of looking for dates, they will be looking for other professionals in their respective fields. I have heard good things about buddypress but I’m not sure if this is exactly what I need. Please help!

Yes, BuddyPress (in particular the profiles and messaging) would be a suitable base for your site.
