Version 1.1. should appear shortly on https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/welcome-pack/. In addition to working with the latest BuddyPress, it also lets you specify more than one person/group as the default friends/groups.
Okay so I have the latest BP, why am I getting…

Well I got it activated by replacing…
require_once( WP_PLUGIN_DIR . '/buddypress/bp-core.php' );<br />
with this one:
require_once(WP_CONTENT_DIR . '/mu-plugins/bp-core.php');<br />
but, I don’t see any options or anything on the admin side. I’m assuming some constants or global variables must have changed since I am using the latest release of BP…does anyone have an updated version of this plugin that works?

The newest version requires WPMU 2.7 branch which is still in development (http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress-mu/branches/2.7/) as well as the latest BuddyPress (by which I mean the BuddyPress SVN trunk https://svn.buddypress.org/trunk).
If you are using BP RC1, then Welcome Pack doesn’t work full stop. Could you clarify what versions you are using so I can check stuff out? Thanks.
Ah maybe that is why, I am using BP-RC1 with WPMU 2.7.1 Beta…
Hrmm, now I am debating on whether I should update to the latest BP trunk…
By the way, is there a way to download a Zip of the latest trunk, or do you have to use SVN? I haven’t quite caught on to the SVN thing yet..
For BP there is – https://trac.buddypress.org/changeset/1324/trunk?old_path=%2F&format=zip.
But if you’re going to use cutting-edge development versions, I would strongly recommended using SVN to get the files out directly as then it’s really, really easy to upgrade to latest versions.
Thanks DJPaul, is there a good place I can go learn about SVN and how to do all that…maybe I’m old fashioned, but I’m used to FTP haha…
Although the discussion here is about getting it to work, I was wondering if a new feature could be added (possibly a way of getting the welcome message to work easily); could new users be sent to a specific URL on account creation/confirmation.
It would be very easy to create a set of welcome pages (example.com/welcome/getting-started) which could have custom page templates and content easily editable.
In summary – could I define a URL for the user to be sent to on account creation? 
I think changing what happens after account activation is beyond the scope of this plugin. I am eventually going to bring a welcome message feature in. You could put a link to your pages in there.
Does Welcome Pack have options to customize the activitation email (without messing up wpmu-functions.php) and insert the actual first name or full name of the new user in ‘Dear User’?

Apologies I haven’t even tried Welcome Pack yet. I’m in the middle of my day job. Shouldn’t even be here… 
No, it doesn’t let you change any of the standard emails that a WPMU or BP site generates.
The next change I am going to make is to get a site “message” sent to new users on registration. Whilst I too need to be able to customise the emails, I’m not sure if that functionality is going to go in Welcome Pack or not. I am thinking the WPMU & BP emails need to be addressed either as patches to their respective software, or as a separate plugin that is in no way BP-specific.
This assumes, of course, that there isn’t an existing plugin out there that will do this. I haven’t searched.

If you use Welcome Pack, I have a version I need testing. There’s something I need confirmed on another server that works, so if you are willing to test (e.g. make one new user account and check it works) please let me know. I’ll then release the new version that works on BP RC2/v1.
Of course you need to be running WPMU 2.7.1 and BP RC2.

would you be able to add a referal add, like if a freind refers you it also ads them to your freinds upon activation, in addition to the ones selected in the pack,
and maybe selecting a few groups based on the member who refered them, or by evaluating a profile field? eg. interests -> search for groups based on x,y,z -> give user option to join in addition to ones selected by welcome pack

@Hyrxx: no, changing the account registration form to implement referrals or investigation of the data provided is beyond the scope of Welcome Pack. Sorry.
The new option did show up to send a default message. I setup all my options, then registered a new user, and nothing worked for me. No default friend, group, or message.
What version of bp and wpmu are you testing this with?
Ver. 1.1 works fine with rc2 except that default group is not associated with the new user. This is what’s happening with my install.
Did we have message function on this plugin, btw?
