I want to create a new category for my groups. In addition to public, private, and hidden, I want to add another category such as “support group”

There isn’t a plugin for this but the groups tag plugin kinda adds this functionality. You basically choose tags for groups and it gives you a tag cloud. If you only allow specific tags to show you can control what groups there are.

I may fork the tags plugin into a real groups type plugin.
