How to combat spammers

First, please accept my apology. I’m sure this topic must already exist, but my search yielded zip on “spam”. Not satisfied with Google search BuddyPress + Spam either.
I’m running a prototype site based on WP 3.3.1 and BP 1.5.4
How do we block spammers? I tried the Anti-Splog plugin, but it refused to install. Said I needed multi-user WordPress, which I thought was superfluous with my configuration.
What is the best solution? What are the WP BP experts doing?
