I think I know the answer to this one already, but given the enforced migration away from my Ning (300 + members – can’t afford the new charges) I wondered if anyone knew of anything that would help me import the forum posts from a ning – and import them to BB Press? The blog posts I can ‘steal’ by using the blogs RSS – but forums are valuable on my ning and moving to buddypress will be a real blow if I can’t get most of my content over from Ning…..

Importing into BP wouldn’t be too hard in theory, but unfortunately Ning doesn’t give you an easy way to get your forum content out. If you can figure out a way to get it out in one piece, let me know and I’ll work on an importer – that would have a lot of value to the community.

That will help you transfer all of the users over to buddypress, but I don’t have any advice on the content

@boonebgorges – can I use your plug-in to import a csv not from Ning? I have a list of students from a university that I want to upload to by WP 2.9.2 and BP (latest version).

All the plug-ins I have looked into are for BP on WPMU or WP where you cannot import Xprofile data.

Do you have a sample Ning export file for me to view (or at least the header/first row) so I can try and adjust my csv to work with your plug-in?

Thanks all – I should have said that I have already imported users – and blog posts are reasonably easy to syndicate using the blog RSS from Ning, but it’s just the forum content that there doesn’t seem to be an automated solution for – I can see lots of database manipulation and massaging going on for me. Lesson: Don’t set up 3rd party sites like that without thinking through the consequences… I wish I had db access at Ning for a moment or two…!
