Main Blog front page redirecting to permalink url

I have BP with MultiSite running and have run into a problem with the front page of the main blog
http://mhs.myotus.com/blog/
redirecting to here:
http://mhs.myotus.com/blog/2010/12/blogs/
This occurred after deactivating the Buddypress plugin (and dependent plugins) for a while to trouble shoot another issue.
I have tried to deactivate plugins but so far with no effect. Ideas?
