newly created as default setting on group directory

I’m trying to remove last active as the default on the group directory page and just keep the group list in the newly created order instead. Although I’ve changed the menu to have “newly created” first on the drop-down list, the directory keeps changing the order according to last active.
Any ideas on how to change this?
