I discovered it is really easy to loop the forums on the first page of a group instead of activity by changing…

locate_template( array( ‘groups/single/activity.php’ ), true );

to…

locate_template( array( ‘groups/single/forum.php’ ), true );

…in the single/home.php file but when I do and try to post a new topic from the front page nothing shows up, it doesn’t register or whatever.

You probably want to make the forums page the default group tab. That way you can do what you want.
