Search and replace status text with regular expressions

Hi,

I have a WP plugin running called searchReplace.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/searchreplace/

I need it to replace custom tags to image-icons for a gaming site.

However, the plugin doesn’t work on buddyPress forumtopics and status messages. How can I regex those messages? Is there an existing plugin or can I easily edit some PHP file to include the regex?
