Upgrade to Buddypress 1.2.4 failed

I just tried to upgrade the Buddypress plugin on my WPMU install in preparation for the upgrade to WordPress 3.0. However, when I added the buddypress folder to the wp-content/plugins directory, it caused the site to render incorrectly (only the header showed up). I thought I could quickly reverse this by simply replacing the buddypress folder with the old one that I had backed up, but now my site does not show up at all (http://blogs.miis.edu).

Any thoughts on what plan of action I should take? Thanks in advance for any advice you have to offer…hoping to get the site back online soon.

Did you disable all other plugins before uploading the BP 1.2.4 folder?

I did not. What steps should I take to fix this now? Should I remove other plugins from the plugins folder?

Yeah, I hope you made a backup of everything before you started.

Can you still access your WordPress Dashboard? If you can then go to your themes panel and first try choosing another theme for your site. Can you confirm if you can do this?

Thanks for helping me through this; I do have a backup of all the files and of the database.

I cannot access the WordPress dashboard at all.

Then via FTP remove all of your plugins (including BP) in your plugin folder. You can just drop them onto your local machine. Now after that try accessing your WP dashboard again. Now what?

Progress! You can now see a header when you visit the main page: http://blogs.miis.edu/

I can also get to my WordPress dashboard now. Should I try installing the latest buddypress plugin now? Thanks again for all of your help!

I have managed to restore my installation to how it was before I began messing with things: http://blogs.miis.edu/

Going forward, do you recommend upgrading to WP 3.0 first and then upgrading BuddyPress? Or vice-versa?

It doesn’t matter if you install WP or BP first.

The only thing you have to take into consideration before upgrading BP is to deactivate any other BP plugins you’re currently using:
    https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/upgrading-from-10x/

If you’re upgrading from WPMU 2.9.2 to WP 3.0, read this guide by Pete Mall:
    http://developersmind.com/2010/06/17/upgrading-wordpress-mu-2-9-2-to-wordpress-3-0/

It’s also a good idea to backup every step of the way. Before upgrading to WP 3.0, backup. Before upgrading to BP 1.2.4.1, backup.
