What is the difference between Groups & a Forum?

    Hi,

I’ve just installed Buddypress, tweaked a child theme & seem to be happy. Now I’m trying to get my head around how the app actually works!

The standard install creates a forum like page called “Groups”. I’ve found that you can also create a page too, so I now have Groups & Forums.

I may be missing something completely obvious, but whats the difference?

    Thanks

    T

I would like to bump-this-up myself. I am working on a FAQ section for our website at http://ProblemSolverXYZ.com and a good explanation of the difference between a “Group”, a “Forum”, and the “Post” would be great. Or, just point me and mrcooper in the right direction.

    Thanks

Forums are linked to groups. Each group can have a forum.

Personally, I choose to hide the forums tab and display only groups. That way you have to open a group to view and to post to the group’s forum. I found it to be too confusing otherwise.

Posts are just posts, so you might use them to update the main news area of the site or the homepage or whatever….but they are not by nature ‘community’ content.

Ahh… like minds work together. I just got finished making changes that mimic exactly what you say. It’s imperative that users don’t get lost or confused on any website. Specially when it’s a social site or interactive site.

    Thanks for your post!

Group is like a root of categories as an example Microsoft.

Forum is a topic of issues as an example: How to do command prompt in Windows 7? That topic should be in the group of Microsoft.

    Mikey3D,

Outstanding explanation! I will use it as you wrote it in my FAQ section.

    Thank you!

    Hi,

talking about forums and group forums, the clear difference between the both from technical aspect will be the URL formation.
Also i see SEO plugins don’t work correctly on Group Forums.

    Any idea why so?
