Do I need to install MU to run BuddyPress?

My client wants an affiliate site to sell products. There will be a storefront and a backend affiliate program. They also want BuddyPress installed for social networking, but from what I can understand (sometimes they’re not super clear) they do not need/want their affiliate to have their own blogs within the site. So my question is, do I really need to install WPMU (or whatever it’s called now) or can I just do a regular WP install?

I should also mention that the main area where we need BuddyPress installed would be something like theirsite.com/righthere, rather than the root.

    Thanks!

Single WP will work fine. MU is only to add user blogs.

That’s what I was hoping for. I just got confused when I saw this:

when you install BP it attaches to the first blog on MU. You can tell it to attach to other blogs. So you could create a community.url.com bog and put the social (BuddyPress) on that url. Some blogs do not want BP taking over but want to add on a social aspect to WordPress.
