AND I solved my own problem by typing it out here.
YES – bp_core_remove_nav_item( ‘invite-anyone’ );

I am using my own child theme based on the core theme. I just tried switching to the default buddypress theme and did not receive the error. I should have tried that.

I spoke with Scott (orig developer) and he ok’d my modified version. It is not supported (by me or Scott), so take your changes.
I modified the file to work with a WP single install and moved the admin area under the Buddypress menu. I also cleaned up the admin display to be inline with current admin panels.…[Read more]

I have been working with this and have gotten it working in a wordpress single install. I have it running on WP 3.0.1 with BP 1.2.5.2
I am not sure if it will work with a WPMU/Network setup now. I will post a link to my modified version, I want to submit the changes to the original developer for them to look at.
