Is it possible to merge the tabs for Followers and Following into one tab, and then use a filter to filter between them?

Is it correct that the Friends module (and Follow plugin also) is not supposed to show when your friends are commenting on posts? I would like that for an upcoming site I’m making, and I was quite disappointed when I found this out.
Has anyone a solution for this?
