Well in a follow-up, the mobile home page keeps resetting back to the standard version without me doing anything. So thats a bug I think.
I think there should just be a right panel in the page editor that allows you to select mobile theme template.

Yes but what if you already have a custom template for the home page of your NON MOBILE version?

I tried Buddypress Albums+ and got this error:

I have the latest versions of both WordPress and Buddypress, but I cannot install any of the leading image gallery plug-ins from Buddypress Album+, etc without getting serious errors when I activate. There is a much simpler, elegant solution to this problem that does not involve messing with the core code.
