Am I missing something? Joining a Group and participating in a discussion are NOT inherently the same thing.

It’s more of a hack with the way BuddyPress.org is manipulating the default behaviour of BP. Tying forums to groups, in this case, highlights both the pros and cons of this.
Maybe that’s key point then: Many of these forums have no reason to be tied to groups.
There is simply no reason for the “Requests and Feedback” Group to exist – at least from the member’s perspective. I’ve beat this drum before, but BP really needs 2 levels of Forums: 1 for large, sitewide discussions, and 1 tied to groups and their more private…[Read more]

I’m still making my way around here…
And no, joining a groups just means you joined a group. no discussion there (in the joining) at all. joining is to *keep track* of the discussions in that group.
