    What’s the character encoding for your WP install? See http://radoff.com/blog/2009/12/03/chinese-characters-in-wordpress/

    If using bp_core_get_username, make sure you do the following:

    – echo the result. Unlike bp_displayed_user_username(), it does not echo automatically. Ie

    <?php echo bp_core_get_username( $user_id ); ?>

    – Feed it $user_id as an argument. If you don’t, the argument will return false.

    See bp-core.php, around line 1005, for the definition of the function, as Brajesh suggested.

    When you create a group, you have the option of making it Public, Private or Hidden. Public groups are free for anyone to join, and their content is viewable by anyone. Private groups are listed in sitewide directories, so that others can see the group names and descriptions when searching and browsing for groups, but the content of the group can only be seen by group members. Group membership for private groups is controlled, so that a member can only join if they’ve requested membership or been invited by a current member. Hidden groups are like private groups, except that they do not appear in sitewide group listings and search.

    Oho, that’s an interesting idea. I’ll try to alter it to work with single WP and post a link.

    Thanks a lot for checking, avi-m. I will download the theme and give it a go.

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    Hm, I wonder if the theme is the issue. Are you on a production site? Is it possible for you to switch to bp-default just for a second to see if the problem recurs there? If you find that it’s directly related to the theme, then I’ll be able to download it and troubleshoot from there.

    It might also be a BP 1.2.1 issue, though I have a feeling it’s not. In any case – let me know if you’re able to try switching themes.

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    avi-m – what version of BP are you running? You using a custom theme, or bp-default?

    @boonebgorges

    chembro – thanks again for your help. I just rolled version 0.2.1 into the repo (should show up shortly). It implements some of the header-related fixes, as well as the redirect after file deletion. Let me know if it’s working for you.

    wicosta – I’ll work on the config page. As for the white page issue – it’s hard to troubleshoot when it’s just a white page. Does it happen with all file types? What form does the URL of the file take? (should be something like http://mysite.com/wp-content/plugins/forum-attachments-for-buddypress/download.php&filenum=3)

    Thanks for all your help, chembro.

    I have fixed some of the apache errors in the trunk – working better now, I think. I will have a look at what’s going on with the deletion and redirect – both of those things are errors. Thanks again for help with the bugfixes :)

    @boonebgorges

    No, I’m not sure. It could be that you’re not running Apache – maybe your server is running nginx or something? I’ll look into it.

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    Oh, I guess it’s because I was trying to throw the whole kitchen sink in there and I put in some duplicates :) Have a look at allowed file types being set near the beginning of forum-attachments-for-buddypress-bp-functions.php to pare them down a bit. I will do this in a subsequent release.

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    chembro – No, you need to go one level above your web root. Figure out the server path is installed by logging onto your FTP space (it’ll be something like /var/www/html or /home/public_html probably) and create a writeable directory one level above that (eg /var/www/bb-attachments or /home/bb-attachments)

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    er, the directory should be called bb-attachments

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    Shoot, I forgot to add the instructions about creating the upload directory. Make a directory one level above your webroot and make sure it’s writeable.

    Thanks for the feedback, kriski. I have wondered about pagination myself. It is easy to add it (actually, it’s already in the code but I commented it out). But I don’t know how best to implement it. If you have 50,000 members, then paging through using WP’s pagination feature is going to take for-ev-er.

    Maybe I’ll put pagination in the next version of the plugin, making the default number of members per page pretty high (100, maybe). Then in the future I’ll add an autocomplete like the one in https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/invite-anyone/ so that admins have a way to find members even on an enormous installation.

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    @bpinspire – I’m not able to replicate it. When you say “the same user won’t see it”, you mean that the person who has been added to the group does not see it on the “my groups” page? Or that the user can’t access the contents of the group?

    The debate about the wire vs activity stream has happened several times already on this board, so it’s probably not worth rehashing it, though for what it’s worth xspringe I think you make some fair points.

    For the moment, if you want to keep the wire, use the backward compatibility plugin: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-backwards-compatibility/

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    Oh, that’s probably because it’s set to get activity types. Go figure. In the code I most recently posted, replace

    &type=activity_update&action=activity_update

    with

    &type=new_blog_post&action=new_blog_post

    (When I was writing the function on my own installation I used activity items as my test case and forgot to change it to blog posts before pasting it here.)

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    Yeah, it’s a bit of a change, isn’t it?

    My strategy for making the transition easier for my users is two-fold:

    1) Make the profile the default view for users (rather than activity), by adding

    define( 'BP_DEFAULT_COMPONENT', $bp->default_component = 'profile' );

    to wp-config.php

    2) Adding the @mentions profile tab, plus some explanatory text, to the members/single/home.php template in my child theme. Thus, right below

    <?php locate_template( array( 'members/single/profile.php' ), true ) ?>

    I’m adding

    <h4><?php bp_displayed_user_fullname(); ?>'s mentions</h4>
    <p>Whenever anyone posts an update on this site containing <?php bp_displayed_user_fullname(); ?>'s handle (<strong>@<?php bp_displayed_user_username() ?></strong>), it shows up as a public message below.</p>

    <p>Want to leave your own public message for <?php bp_displayed_user_fullname(); ?>?

    <div class="generic-button" id="post-mention" >
    <a href="<?php bp_send_public_message_link() ?>" title="<?php _e( 'Mention this user in a new public message, this will send the user a notification to get their attention.', 'buddypress' ) ?>"><?php _e( 'Mention this User', 'buddypress' ) ?></a>
    </div>

    followed by the activity loop, taken right from bp-default/activity/activity-loop.php, but with the following relevant modification: the arguments for bp_has_activities are

    <?php if ( bp_has_activities( 'scope=mentions' ) ) : ?>

    (You’ll have to do some styling to make it look right, but you get the idea.)

    It’s not an exact duplication of the Wire – I’ve tried to embrace the new @mention stuff, while still capturing the “leave a note for me” spirit of the Wire.

    The WordPress Codex has detailed instructions on extending the software without modifying core files: https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API. In short: wherever you see do_action or apply_filters in the BP/WP core files, a hook is being created. You can then write custom functions in a plugin file that modifies WP’s behavior without modifying the core code by hooking into those actions or filters.

    Short example: If you want to add a piece of metadata to an activity item, you might try something like this (in a file called bp-custom.php in wp-content/plugins):

    function add_genre_to_activity( $content, $user_id, $activity_id ) {
    if ( strpos( $content, 'rock' ) )
    bp_activity_update_meta( $activity_id, 'genre', 'rock' );
    }
    add_action( 'bp_activity_posted_update', 'add_genre_to_activity', 10, 3 );

    which will add the meta value ‘rock’ (key ‘genre’) whenever an activity item contains the word ‘rock’. Of course, this is probably not how you want to determine the genre, but this shows you how to add the metadata without touching core code.

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    Definitely do Option 2. Use that kind of line inside of a function that will then be hooked something like this:

    add_action( 'bp_activity_add', 'my_custom_activity_meta_stuff', 10, 1 )

    If you then want to allow filtering by genre, you’ll have to add an option to the dropdown at this action: bp_activity_filter_options

    I can’t tell just by glancing at the code – will additional filters then be handled automatically by bp-default’s ajax.php and global.js?

    I installed the theme to see what I could see.

    The problem is caused by the following lines in fusion/js/fusion.js:

    jQuery.fn.fadeOut = function(speed, callback) {
    return this.animate({opacity: 'hide'}, speed, function() {
    if (jQuery.browser.msie) this.style.removeAttribute('filter');
    if (jQuery.isFunction(callback)) callback();
    });
    };

    (lines 56-61 in the version I downloaded). I don’t know exactly what the problem is, but if you delete those lines then the activity filter works again, at least on my local version.

    Have you tried another theme? Test another WP theme with the template pack plugin to see if you can get the AJAX to work there. If you can’t make it work with a couple different themes then at least you can rule out the theme being the problem.

    Anton, you aren’t by chance using this plugin, are you? https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-include-non-member-comments/ I have heard from some people that they’re having the problem you described, though I can’t for the life of me reproduce it myself.

    If you’re going to use embed code, you have to make sure that (a) you’ve switched the editor to HTML (rather than Visual) mode, and (b) that you’ve added embed and object to your allowedtags array, either through a plugin that allows such code or through a custom function.

    Using the oEmbed method (where you just paste the URL on its own line of the editor) is a far easier solution!
