Just as an update, I ended up using these two plugins to achieve the desired result:

I was wondering if it’s possible to turn the wildcard search on by default, as I don’t think casual users will know to use the % and _
I tried to make the mod to ps-main.php, but now it isn’t bringing anything at all back. Using version 2.1 on WP 3.0.4
