Set the groups to private?

Newly-added mandatory fields stay unset until a user goes to edit their profile (for whatever reason); then they must set them.

Look in wp-admin, in BuddyPress > Components. Is “Settings” disabled?

For that one, suggest you look at the code and if it could be done filtered onto WordPress’ function. Raise a ticket if you think we’ve overlooked something, we may well have 🙂
