Just remove the buttons in your theme templates.

So, let me understand; they click on the link in the email, it activates their account, and… then what? Are they not redirected back somewhere else?

It’s caused by posting a forum topic from the forums directory page, and not picking a group for the “post in” group dropdown box.

Have you checked for any error in your web browser’s console, or Apache’s log file?

Sounds like you’re halfway there; you also need https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-multi-network/

Double-check you haven’t got a filter set — try picking a specific option, and then picking the ‘show all’ again.

Nothing in core, and I’ve not seen any plugins providing this sort of API.
