What version of BuddyPress are you using? Are you using BP-Labs plugin, and Akismet? “1.1/comment-check” looks vaguely like an Akismet check URL, which is interesting.

Fatal errors would be logged to your web server’s error log; if you tell us what’s in there, we can try to help. If you don’t know how to access your log file, ask your host for assistance.

It ought to be working. Since you refer to your activity header, I assume it’s being used inside an activity loop. What version of BP did you upgrade from?
