Some are, indirectly, bugs in BuddyPress core and I don’t want to fix them (or workaround) in Welcome Pack. It’ll break translations. If I remember to patch core, I’ll get them working for BP 1.6.

BuddyPress is a WordPress plugin (obviously), and as that setting is a WordPress option, it’ll take affect anywhere. Where exactly do you see the Register button on your site if not on a BuddyPress template page?

That’ll probably only work when used inside a Groups template loop. Where are you putting this?

Just don’t edit the plugin. Make your changes in your own plugins, and hook in and filter the behaviour which you want to change.
