To get your site back, rename /wp-admin/plugins/, visit wp-admin/plugins.php in your browser, and then rename /wp-admin/plugins back to what it was originally. Refresh your browser, reactivate the plugins and then try activating them again. This could be a conflict with your theme but worth checking plugins first.

remove_filter( 'bp_get_the_profile_field_value', 'wpautop' );

would do it but also remove the paragraph tags from all other fields

If you don’t want to use those components, go to your site’s Wp-admin -> BuddyPress -> Components, and disable the ones you don’t want.

I don’t think BP work with the index.php style of permalinks. Are you able to turn on mod_rewrite on your web server (assuming you’re using Apache?)
