achievements/index.php is the achievements directory template. Achievements doesn’t use “padded” class anywhere. You’ll probably have to add it in at the appropriate place, I assume it comes from the canvas theme.

This is a change in WordPress 3.1, I believe. You are best to ask for support and discussion on the wordpress.org forums.

Groups do have privacy settings, as you’ve found. You are probably seeing other people refer to profile privacy, etc. For an explanation of the groups privacy settings, create a group on http://testbp.org/ — it’s listed on one of the screens.

It’s not so much a question of “should they be removed”, it’s just how bbPress installs itself. Of course, this clutters up WordPress if you decide to not use bbPress. If you change the site time settings in the ‘settings > general’ panel of wp-admin, new activity stream entries should pick up the new format.

There’s probably something in your web server’s error log with an error message which would probably tell you what’s happening. Who is your host? Bluehost?

You should never edit anything in core, changes will be lost on upgrades.
