I think the registration that this theme uses: http://buddyboss.com/demo/register should be default for the BuddyPress plugin, it’s super clean and looks great.

Try using BuddyPress, I know groups can create events with the Jet Event system.

The project is far from abandoned, for an open source project it’s doing nicely for development.
