WordPress Origin Story | After a few years of hesitation I decided to start my own company in the last quarter of 2007. In the first few months of 2008 I was busy building my own CMS (Xoops-inspired) and when it was practically ready to use for clients, I realised I’d have to spend a lot of time on maintaining, security-testing & further developing the CMS. Time I wouldn’t be able to use on building new websites for my clients. I then thought to support the “most used” CMS’s (WordPress, Mambo/Joomla, Drupal, Xoops, Magento, Prestashop) and even developed a few blocks for Prestashop in that time. Not long after that I figured I don’t really need to support all those open source options and can just pick 1. That decision was about 80/20 based on “I don’t like this CMS, it’s horrible to use and I don’t like the way it looks” and “supporting all of them means I have to spend time on learning all of them and I didn’t decide to not use my own CMS to put so much time into learning about all these different CMS’s” And thus I decided (I believe it was July 2008) to focus on WordPress. I loved the simplicity of it (still do!). Not just in how clients would be able to use it, but the logic in building themes & plugins as well. |
