@johnjamesjacoby – What are you thoughts on changing: bp_blogs_record_activity( ) to make use of the featured image if one has been set for the post, rather than trawling the content and thumbnailing images?

@hitler – they are coming – I guess partly as a result of end users tearing their hair out – group forums has some interesting technical / logical reasoning behind it, but the user interface experience was far from perfect. Check out @johnjamesjacoby post on the imminent new approach:…[Read more]

@johnjamesjacoby I read your post about future of bbpress. What does this mean for people who are already using bbpress as a part of buddypress?
When we upgrade to newer versions of buddypress (without bbpress), how will the existing bbpress data (forms, topics) be handled? I hope the transition will be smooth.
-
Conversion will be handled gracefully. There will be a few options presented to either keep your existing setup if it works for you, or convert to a newer version of bbPress if you’d like.
Of course, this is all still in the planning phase so there’s no example yet.
-
Any update on when the separate buddypress and bbpress are coming?

@johnjamesjacoby You mentioned in the testbp.org post ( here) that you have installed W3 Total Cache on testbp.org. I have two requests 1. Can you share what settings/options you are using 2. What difference do you see in performance ? Since testbp has lot of users and activity, this will be a great test for W3 Total […]

Spam problem – a more worrying development
Guys, you might want to check whether your name is being ‘hijacked’ by the BuddyPress spammers.
I found an account that had been setup using my name on a site called fannation.com
When I looked at the blog posts on fannation.com (that had been posted in my name), I…[Read more]

Hmm don’t like the sound of that at all. Is this directly related to group creation here? Off to have a look around!
-
It’s not groups, it’s direct in their profiles – visit any of those users, and you’ll see their profile description is just stuffed with spam links. There were also some who were stuffing status updates with spam links.
-
checking updates / descriptions with multiple links would help a little – anyone have an automated tool for this?
-
We might run that by @boonegorges and see how hard it might be to whip up a simple filter or the like to catch more than 2 or three links and clean them out. the updates and improvements should be implemented any day now. If no provision already made for this issue it might be politely suggested.
-
@boonebgorges (I miss the ‘b’ out as well).
I wrote to fannation, and they deleted the offending account straightaway (good on them).
Can we delete the profiles on here for the already identified users?
-
Thanks for the heads up on this.
@hnla It should be pretty straightforward to filter for a certain number of links within a profile and then reject it. I’ll add that to the Ninja list.
-
I thought it wouldn’t be too hard and WP already has this ability floating aound to trap qnt of links.
btw could you remove that ‘b’ as it catches me out each time 🙂
-
An extra ‘e’ in the surname would help as well 🙂
-
Just be easier if he could get a new name altogether :p
-

-
-
Good to see a fast and positive response from the site.
Only the admin can delete profiles, not sure if Boone has this ability now with the increased access granted?

Marked them all as spammers. We’re working on a solution to this so try to sit tight. No fun for anyone. :/

I’ve been mulling this over the last couple of weeks in my mind. Remember a couple of months ago when there was quite a stir about where Andy had gone and if BP was stuck in the mud? And then after a lot of public outcry @johnjamesjacoby came to the rescue, issued several bug releases, wrote a […]

@pisanojm – I don’t have control with how plugin groups are created.
@johnjamesjacoby might be able to figure out why the BuddyPress Badge group isn’t being created:

@johnjamesjacoby @hnla @pgibbs – the site is “inundated” with spammers today – other than messaging John is there any way we can help deal with them quicker / better?
-
If they post to forum threads we can delete them but member created groups are an issue as only admins can deal with those and a range of other issues so at the moment a note has to be dropped to JJJ. This needs to change somehow though and the groups cleaned up as they leave a very bad impression.
-
Most of the spam this afternoon was link stuffing in their status updates. Page upon page stuffing up the community activity stream, but also polluting with the site search
-
-
Yeah… It’s no fun. We need to get bp.org fixed up asap.

Done. Slug needs to be changed eventually too, since it’s generated from the group name.
