Alright, no suggestions. I sure am not having any luck getting feedback in these forums.
Plan B would be to get quotes from some reputable WP development companies to build something custom, as I don’t know that I can build it myself. Can anyone point me to some of the more recommended developers in the community? If it’s against the forum policies to reply publicly with suggestions just send them to me privately please – multiple suggestions are preferred.
By the way, this would be for a new installation of WP and BP.
Thanks for the replies… having used WordPress several times before to build client sites, I do feel pretty comfortable with it and understand what it is. I’ve just never used it for a community site solution like my vBulletin site business. I guess I’m just trying to feel comfortable with the idea of using a script that wasn’t originally designed to be a community script as the basis for a community site.
One of the drawbacks of it not being a community script out of the box is that you have to load it up with a ton of plugins and then worry about compatibility and quality of code (something I’ve also encountered with vB, Drupal, and Joomla). The more plugins the more headache come upgrade time usually. Hopefully that won’t be a big issue like it is with vB.
I think I feel good enough to start installing a test site to build it up and see how close we can get to our project vision using available plugins and themes.
I’m completely new to BP, but am considering using it for my next project – which will involve sub-profiles like the vehicles example above. Has anyone gone down the paths suggested above to show us the possibilities? If this can be done I’ll likely start on some test development. I just want to know first that it’s possible (without extensive custom coding) before committing time. I’m not a big coder so I’d have to contract out if it requires a moderate amount of coding, which wouldn’t be so bad if the foundation is already there. So, has anyone successfully done this?
