Speaking as a dabbler (not a PHP coder) who’s been poking around with Drupal Commons and BuddyPress a while:

    Drupal Commons Pros —
One very nicely designed feature set
Very close to being ready out-of-the-box
Well-suited for professional or corporate use
    Blog well-integrated with other features

Drupal Commons Cons (compared with BP) —
Somewhat configurable, but within a relatively narrow range
    Small number of themes
Themes difficult to customize after a point
Not ideal for non-business users; neither warm nor fuzzy
    Blog has very few features
Getting plugins for additional features to work is often more challenging
Drupal community, while very friendly, doesn’t address the non-technical user as readily as the WP/BP community; they’re not quite, but almost, exclusive to developers. In fairness, they’re very helpful to beginning developers.

    Hope this helps.

Thought I’d bump this, since I really want to know… there ought to be a way to convert WordPress posts and their associated comments to forum threads. The script at:

    http://code.google.com/p/wordpress-to-bbpress-converter/

requires the standalone version of bbPress. The bbPress legacy download page:

    https://bbpress.org/download/legacy/

returns “Error 404 – Destination not found” messages for all links to the old standalone bbPress. And anyway, surely there’s a more recent way of accomplishing this? Any help would be appreciated.

Ya know, I’ll bet I can work with that! This is a great forum, thank you.

Actually, on closer inspection none that I could find would really do. For one thing, I don’t need to replace the existing login widget. But mainly, I want an area that appears as part of the front page layout, that I can arrange with text and graphics to describe the site’s functionality and purpose. I don’t want a panel that slides in from the side or top, or appears as a modal login box obscuring the rest of the page. And nothing that’s so prefabricated that there’s almost no room to lay out my text and graphics. Just: here’s a box on the front page about the size of a small blog post, that is only visible to people who aren’t logged in.

Thank you! At least some of the plugins returned on a search of that term look configurable enough for what I have in mind.

Very helpful! Would that be the “Community Blog” plugin by Burt Adsit? And the Quick Post Widget looks good at first glance — is there an advantage to some of the others that you mention? Thanks a lot.
