OK RESOLVED.
Thanks NM, Yes it was the BuddyPress Album component that I had disabled while trying to sort out the group avatars and not reactivated while trying to fix this error.
When I reactivated the BP Album plugin the error message disappeared.

I’m running the current versions of wordpress, buddypress and bbpress forum plugin for buddypress and the basic woo commerce plugin. The server is with bluehost and it’s on “test” a subdomain. No files have been changed.

OK problem has rectified itself — there was a quick error message and then the page displayed. Maybe it needed to propogate?
