I’m quite sure you can’t tack on just any component in the bp_is_active() function.

It should be like this:
if ( bp_is_active('profile') || bp_is_active('activity') || ... etc ) {

The easiest thing would be to list what you want publically available.

Yup, that function can be found in /bp-core/bp-core-avatars.php

This is working for me on a deep-integrated external bbPress install. Let me know if this works for you.
