Thanks Paul. Are the bbPress roles documented anywhere? Are they vestigial? Can they just be ignored and if so, should they be removed from the interface as choices when adding a new user?

I did research it in the WordPress Codex, Google and even the Wikipedia. I am not perfect, so maybe I missed something. The process of installing the BuddyPress plugin makes the role options for adding a new user change from “Subscriber, Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor” to “Subscriber, Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor, Key…[Read more]

OK, when I install WordPress and add a user, the role choices for adding a new user are: “Subscriber, Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor” After installing BuddyPress the additional roles appearing in the choices are: “Key Master, Moderator, Member, Inactive, Blocked.” Are these bbPress roles? Whether they are bbPress or not where are they…[Read more]

I just posted my actual “Roles” question to: https://buddypress.org/community/members/djpaul/ He seems to be someone who should know the answers. @hnla I know how to use Google and it seems that someone did fix search in here, since my question was posted. Please just add comments if you’re actually adding information (signal vs. noise) to help this […]

@DJPaul WordPress clearly defines these roles: “Subscriber, Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor” – The roles are clear and they hierarchically bestow more privileges as you traverse up the hierarchy.
When I install BuddyPress these additional roles are added: “Key Master, Moderator, Member, Inactive, Blocked”
Are BuddyPress roles…[Read more]

Those are installed by bbPress (the forums). WordPress won’t use those extra roles. Have only recently become aware of this, especially if bbPress/BuddyPress is uninstalled, those roles still remain.

It’s not so much a question of “should they be removed”, it’s just how bbPress installs itself. Of course, this clutters up WordPress if you decide to not use bbPress. I think they should be removed on bbPress (BuddyPress would have to special-case this somewhere, but the idea is similar). Next time I catch the lead developer online, I’ll flag…[Read more]

Sorry to ask a much lower level question in this thread, but I can’t find any docs for the additional user roles that come with BuddyPress. First, I’d like to not have to guess what privileges they bestow. Second, I would like to understand how they interact with the original WordPress roles: subscriber, author, contributor, […]

https://codex.buddypress.org/?s=roles gives me a blank page. I’d really like to learn more about roles.

How did you try the YouTube Integration? e.g. what additional plugins (other than BuddyStream) were you using?
