THanks for the reply and that is certainly useful but the client is clear that they want the member directory page to be grouped by this State field so I need to edit members-loop.php accordingly.

I have a “State” field in the extended user profile.

The field is a select menu with options for each state.

I’d like to amend the members loop so that members are listed by State but am having trouble implementing this.

My member listing page is always using page.php from my active theme.

I’ve tried creating a custom template and specifying that in the template chooser on the “Edit” page.

I’ve tried creating a page-slug.php using the slug of the listing page.

Both these approaches don’t work and it’s confusing the heck out of me.
