Let’s not stop there! From my laundry list off the top of my head (not bothering to use a UL because I don’t know if it’ll get stripped or not): Link in the overall forums directory view to the last post in a thread (as Modemlooper suggests above) Thread pagination links for each forum thread in […]

Can we at least get blockquotes working in the forums? This is ridiculous. Changing it to italics above.
kses.php, as I recall.

wordpress will load page.php for every page you create so you cant really customize it.. Not necessarily. Echoing modemlooper, you don’t need any of that code above. If you want Pages you create in WP to have different layouts, create a template file (https://codex.wordpress.org/Pages#Creating_Your_Own_Page_Templates), upload it to the root of…[Read more]

By the way, as an aside, I’ve been an active member of Metafilter, which I assume most of you have heard of (perhaps erroneously), closely watched it evolve for about 10 years now, and think of it as one of the best, smartest, most well-run semi-open communities on the web, and I believe a lot […]

Also, yes, I know ‘get back on your porch, grandpa — forums are so 1998.’ Fair enough — but that way of structuring conversation on the web is everywhere for a good reason. It works, and people intuitively understand it. You can’t force people into new interaction paradigms, you have to design interpenetrating ways of […]

Yeah, I’m very much in agreement with Modemlooper on the sitewide Activity stream, here and in general. Focussing on it as a hub of activity is the wrong paradigm, because it moves too fast for anything but the smallest communities. One excellent solution is rich’s plugin that brings activity stream replies to forum posts inline […]

Yep, add bpcustom.php if it doesn’t exist, and (as I recall) use the filename of the .po and .mo files as your BPLANG.

As requested here. I am literally slavering to find out how to do this. It would make like Developer Life complete, at least for two BP projects I’m currently working on. I’d love to be able to have different types of ‘Groups’ on my site, and just like here, and one of the Group types be […]

Nope, no code shown. I can’t see a way to post code inline here — BP.org forums used to parse everything between backticks as code, now, who knows?

Keep in mind, though, if some Groups are hidden, then people not belonging to those Groups won’t see activity items for them. In fact, you might not even see Activity items for public groups you don’t belong to — I’ve never tested that.

There’s one in /wp-admin/profile.php in the WordPress dashboard. Presumably you could look at how that’s working, and just reuse the code in your register.php in your child theme.

You can just keep the .po and the .mo where the Buddypress one is (as in the code snippet above). Name them something appropriate.
Edit: Actually, I don’t know if that’s wise or not. Best wait for second opinion on location.

Editing your posts is possible in the forums, but not in the Activity streams. Which makes some sense, if you tilt your head the right way, because forums posts are forever, and activity disappears below the fold very quickly and is never seen again.

After a few months of working with BP (with a good background in working with WP in general, and pretty strong HTML/CSS skills), I’m getting pretty comfortable. I’ve found the best for me has been to a) set up a localhost install using WAMP or XAMPP that you can play with and wipe easily. b) […]

I’d add a top/bottom pad, too (say padding:5px 0;), but that’s just me! 😉
