This is a theme problem. Try using the default BuddyPress theme.

Do you get the error when using the default BuddyPress theme?

BuddyPress is no different from WordPress in this regard. You just need to add a sidebar to your header.php. Google “how to add sidebar to wordpress”

You will need to edit the theme files in the “members” folder of your theme.

You might consider using Gravity Forms or a different plugin to pull this off.

This sounds like a problem with your theme’s code. What is the “a href” code for the home link in header.php?
