@Anom There already is a plugin for this, and it works very well. It’s called, I’m not kidding, Maintenance Mode. You can format the page it shows if the users are not logged in and it allows you to control what type of user can even log in. I limit access to Administrators only. No other […]

Is it possible to download bp-authz? I followed the link and it appears that you have removed it. I may have been looking at the wrong page, though.

Tyler Regas started the forum topic (Hopefully) Simple security question in the group Security & Privacy: 14 years, 4 months ago
Would it be possible to create a simple plugin for WordPress in general which disallows unregistered visitors to see nothing but the home and the login/account creation pages? Once they create an account and login, then they should be able to navigate the site as one can do now.
Thoughts?

Being a writer doesn’t grant me unlimited clarity. I often have to work on a few revisions before arriving at a version I can be pleased with. As such, I would like to further clarify my point regarding Play or Pay to be included in the FOSS movement.
I have been using FOSS for about 10 years now, and in many cases when I have had a problem…[Read more]

I am shamed by the moderation of your responses, R-A-Y and Jeff. Thank you. I can also appreciate the complexity that security and privacy offer any project. I do not make light of it.
I also do not make light the need for security in any project which offers social networking to the masses, as BP does. The frustration I exhibit is indicative of…[Read more]

Thanks for your response. Again, your frustrations are noted. Open Source software is far from perfect. In fact, in a very real sense, it can be more frustrating than working with proprietary software platforms — not only from a user’s standpoint, but also from a developer’s standpoint. I have days (many of them in fact) when the process is…[Read more]

The point I was trying to make about “hiring a developer” is in the real world, we have timelines and deadlines to meet. If you’re waiting on FOSS to hit those deadlines, it is highly unlikely that will happen.
Like Jeff said, there are a ton of ways to get involved if you’re not a coder. Documentation, solid testing and supporting the…[Read more]

You have GOT to be kidding me. Okay, Jeff. If this BP-authz thing works, I’ll eat several crows, but this was too long in coming.

I agree! It has been a long process and I’m ready for it to be over. But, as @r-a-y states below, BuddyPress as well as my Privacy Component are free. That is one reason why development can sometimes take awhile. If I were getting paid to do this, I would have had it out the door a long time ago. Of course, there was nothing stopping someone e…[Read more]

That is correct. The link to the original version that worked very well under BP 1.1.3 has been removed. There is no new download link. I will be releasing the next version very soon after I’m done testing it with BP 1.2.5 and WP 3.0.

I’m annoyed, I’m going to rant, and some of you probably won’t like it. If you can’t stomach raw honesty, don’t read further.
I’m incensed at the lack of movement in BuddyPress. Don’t bother telling me to jump in if I don’t like how it’s going. I’m not a developer and have no talent for coding. I do not, however, accept that I must wait for…[Read more]

First of all, WordPress has been tugging along for 7 years. BuddyPress is just barely over a year old! WP developers are just starting to look at BP, so you should hopefully see increased plugins and involvement from other developers in the coming months and years.
Secondly, if you did your due diligence, you would have found a few threads here…[Read more]

I appreciate your honesty. Your concerns are heard and fit well within the recent conversations that some of us have had about offering more proactive communication, improving the overall functionality of the BP.org site, and addressing current and future features in the codebase. Expressing your views is the first step toward a solution. I would…[Read more]

I have recently started a new WP/BP site and was trying to use tweetstream, but it broke forums and a few other things until I turned it off. Not sure that plugin is in a usable state. I doubt this helps, but it’s nice when you know that you’re not the only person with this […]

Tyler Regas started the forum topic Seeking method to limit access of unregistered users to homepage in the group Third Party Components & Plugins: 14 years, 5 months ago
Hey there all! I’m working on a project where we need to make sure that unregistered users cannot view the internal content of the site until they have registered and logged in. Seeing the homepage is fine, in fact it’s encouraged, but there needs to be a notice that in order to continue they need […]
