The problem was solved with your suggestion! The “culprit” was found to be the “Smart Slide Show Widget”, after disabling which, the dragging operation normalized automatically. The BP Columns Theme too is working now. I find the theme to be quite useful. Perhaps at a later date you may consider upgrading it appropriately.
Thanks again!
Hi,
Thank you for the suggestion given.
I changed the theme of the site, and also experimented with both 2 column as well 3 column themes. However, whatever be the theme, I am just not able to modify the sidebar definitions, nor I am able to drag any of the available widgets to the sidebar. The crossbar icon appears, but the desired action of dragging does not take place.
Perhaps there is some setting somewhere that needs to be changed?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Hello Ben,
Documentation for the plugin may be read here: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-registration-options/.
Thanks.
Hello Ben,
Thank you for the insight given.
I also await advice on how to be able to continue using the “BuddyPress Registration Options” plugin – it is currently disabled because it was not allowing the public to access/read the groups/forums of the site.
Thanks again.
Hello Ben,
Thank you for the response.
With the settings I made, the groups and forums are now publicly accessible on the internet, and may also get indexed with time.
Request you to suggest an alternative arrangement.
Hello,
This problem was solved, as follows:
1. Disable “BuddyPress Registration Options” plugin.
2. In Settings >> General >> New User Default Role, set to “Blocked”, or some appropriate value to make spam registration difficult. Thanks to Hugo for pointing to the solution.
Hello Hugo,
The BP-centric plugins installed are “BuddyPress Registration Options” and “BuddyPress Login Redirect”. Might they be disallowing public access to the forums/groups? How to disable the disallowing feature?
Sorry to bump up this thread, but I would like advice from the BP gurus on accessing forum posts without the need to log into the site with a username/password. Currently, whenever the URL of a forum post is given in any public site such as Twitter, you are redirected to the log in / account-creation page. For example, here is an example of a forum post that a user wanted to provide URL of, but couldn’t:
Hello Paul,
Thank you for the input of disabling the “Discussion Forums” option in the Components tab. Doing so however makes the “Forums” tab invisible altogether, and only 3 tabs remain: Components, Pages and Settings.
Are we missing something?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Chouf1,
We followed the advice given, and experimented with the settings. Finally, we uninstalled bbPress to redo the forum installation.
Now, the BP settings are as follows:
1. In Components tab, Groups option is disabled.
2. In Forums tab, a button “Uninstall Group Forums” is seen, adjacent to “Install site wide forums”. Clicking on this button leads to two new buttons – “Install Group Forums” and “Use Existing Installation”. However, when we do some other task and return to this tab, the button “Use Existing Installation” is no longer visible. Only the “Uninstall Group Forums” tab remains, adjacent to “Install site wide forums”. Which means, we are effectively unable to get rid of “Group Forums” and use only the site-wide forums.
Request members to suggest a way out. How to uninstall Group Forums and use site-wide forums only?
Thanks in advance.
Sorry to bump up this thread… the problem of a registered, logged-in user not being able to create a new topic refuses to go away. We had installed group-forums first, but later uninstalled it, and went for site-wide forums. Now when a user clicks on “New Topic”, they get the message – “You are not a member of any groups so you don’t have any group forums you can post in. “, meaning perhaps that the Groups still is required to be created. How to tell BP to remove the Groups feature and get it to install site-wide forums?
Request BP gurus / experts to share their advice and experience.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Thanks modemlooper for the input. However, IP addresses and spam control are administrative functions. They are useful for the site administrator or may be the moderators, but not the lay user. Request you / BP designers to consider amending the design appropriately.
@mercime and Keith,
Thank you for pointing out to this plugin. It works exactly as desired.
Thanks again.
Hi,
I agree that it would be a great feature add if users need not have to run a third-party avatar-resizing plugin/program. Presently, all our users have been asked to run a free utility available here: http://www.picresize.com/. This additional step can be bypassed if BP provides image resizing facility in the front end.
1. Thanks; I managed to create a menu item of this name (the default menu item had got deleted by mistake), and linked it to the Members page using the URL given in BP>> Members>>Members page. This solved the problem.
2. I am still struggling with resizing user images in the front end in a straightforward manner, and would appreciate your sharing how image resizing was handled by you.
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
Thanks for your inputs. Hugo’s suggestion of having all user fields merged into the Base group appears more convenient. Paul, thank you for pointing me to the Profile >> Edit tab.
